Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans from the Myristicaceae
family) is the seed of a tropical tree and
has an aromatic, sweet, warm and rich flavour.
A native to the Spice Islands, this is one
of the sought-after spices that Columbus
sailed the ocean blue in search of. These
days, Indonesia and Grenada are the world's
main sources of mace and nutmeg.
Nutmeg tastes like the holidays, and most
people add it to holiday spirits like mulled
wine, eggnog and cider, as its warm, sweet
flavor is a pleasant addition. In addition
to holiday beverages, baked sweets and puddings,
nutmeg is often paired with cheese dishes
and fillings and creamy sauces.
Nutmeg is a traditional flavouring for
cakes, gingerbreads, biscuits and fruit
or milk puddings. Today, nutmeg's popularity
has shrunk and the spice is less used, still
most in Arab countries, Iran and Northern
India, where both nutmeg and mace appear
in delicately flavoured meat dishes.
